Who Do You Think You Are?
When asked to answer the question, "Who are you?" where do you you turn? Do you point to your accomplishments? Do you tell people what you do for a paycheque? Do you describe who your family and friends are? Do you locate where you've lived or where you went to school?
Most of us wrestle with who we are. We have identity issues and sometimes we have identiy crises. We're not quite sure who we are or what should define us. Am I first my gender, my career, my income level, my ethnicity, or my hobbies? Am I a firstborn child, a single parent, an investor or an adventure seeker? Am I a retired person, an unemployed person or person facing a difficult challenge? Who am I?
When Jesus defines who we are, our value and security never has to be tied to the roller coaster ride of the open market of who other people say we are. If we are followers of Jesus, we are first God's children and friends of the King. God defines who we are. And he says we are his treasure. Our identity is tied to being created and rescued by and for our Lord Jesus Christ. The work's already been done to make this possible. Because of Jesus. Now we have the joy of knowing who we are is anchored in who he is.
